Student Council's first fundriaiser of the 2006-7 year was the Kaparot Project which raised money for a bone marrow registry for sick children in Israel.

The SHDS Student Council

  • meets monthly from November through June
  • represents the voice of the student body on issues relevant to it
  • distributes tzedakah funds collected by the students
  • takes an active role in events such as the Purim Carnival and Lag b’omer
  • sponsors special days and activities during the course of the year

The President chairs all meetings and represents the student body in school-wide events.  The President must be a member of the 6th grade.

The Vice President serves as president in the absence of the President.  The Vice President must be a member of the 5th or 6th grade.

The Secretary posts the agenda of the Student Council meetings one week in advance, solicits items for the agenda from the students, and takes minutes of the meetings. The Secretary must be a member of the 4th, 5th or 6th grade.

The Treasurer counts tzedakah funds, reports on amounts of funds, and presents suggestions each month for distribution.  The Treasurer must be a member of the 4th, 5th or 6th grade.

Class Representatives from Grades 2-6 are elected by their class on the Monday following general elections and represent the views of their classmates on issues before the Student Council.  The 1st Grade may send observers to Student Council meetings.

All candidates for office must have been enrolled at the Syracuse Hebrew Day School for at least one year prior to their candidacy.  No student may serve as class representative for two years in a row.

Candidates for Council Officers must submit a signed permission form from their General and Judaic Studies teachers indicating that they have a B average and are in good academic standing. 

By 3 p.m. on the Friday before elections, all candidates must submit to Dr. Davis their speech in final written form.  The speech may contain no unrealistic promises, no promises of food rewards, and no inappropriate language or proposals.  This is the speech that must be delivered at the Elections Assembly.  Candidates who deviate from their prepared text will become ineligible.
