Each spring, the Day School mounts a full-scale dramatic production. Shirley Myrus directs the play; Mr. Kerr Whitt is our Music Director and Dr. Davis produces and provide liaison with the school.
The play is an afterschool activity. It is not a school play in the sense that all children participate. Within the scope of our school day, we offer all of our children an opportunity to perform on stage. The afterschool play offers a further opportunity for those children who are especially interested in the performing arts to develop their skills in a setting that is consonant with and complementary to the education they receive at SHDS.
Because we believe that drama can be an extremely valuable component of a child's education, we want to encourage as many children as possible to participate in the play. There is a caveat, however: this afterschool activity demands great commitment of time, energy and attitude. Before you permit your child to take part, we would like to ask you all to think about the following questions: Will you take this seriously? Are you willing to really work hard? Are you willing to make the play an absolute priority for three months?
The last question is particularly crucial for those trying out for major parts. The play will have to take precedence over sports, gymnastics, piano lessons, family visits, etc. While not as critical for children with smaller roles, it is important to realize that, for the months of February, March and April, the play will be very time-consuming. Rehearsals for students in Grades 3-6 will begin in January and are held thereafter on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Illness is the only excuse for missing rehearsals. Students in grade 2 begin attending in February.
