Kita Alef
Once students are able to read (December), the Shacharit (morning) service, with melodies, is learned. Explanations of the meaning of prayers is given. By the end of the year, students know and lead their own services. All material learned in Kindergarten is reviewed and the brachot are reinforced.
Kita Bet
Students know the morning service and lead their own prayers. Hallel, Kabbalat Shabbat and prayers related to Shabbat are studied along with the rest of Birkat Hamazon (short version).
3rd Grade
Students review Shacharit prayers weekly and learn Mincha, Birkat Hamazon and Kabbalat Shabbat service. The melody, recitation and meaning of the ideas expressed in Birkat HaMazon are mastered. The meaning and use of brachot are reinforced.
4th Grade
Continued reinforcement of Shacharit and Mincha, which are practiced on a regular basis. Maariv is learned. Emphasis is on the geography of the siddur and on prayers commonly recited in all synagogues.
5th Grade
Students recite Shacharit prayers.
The following prayers are studied: Musaf for Rosh Chodesh, Shabbat Shacharit additions
The formal study of Cantillation begins. Students first learn the Purim Megillah trope so that they can read portions of Megillat Esther on Purim. They also learn the blessings the Haftorah blessings and study Haftorah trope. They read the Jonah haftarah for an all-school assembly.
6th Grade
All prayers are reviewed, with emphasis placed on holiday prayers. Shabbat Musaf is studied.
The formal study of Cantillation continues with the introduction of the Torah service, including blessings. Torah trope is learned in groups divided according to the synagogue to which a student's family belongs. Instruction is provided by the professional staff of the student's synagogue.
