A SPECIAL LETTER TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 1-6:
Hi, everyone! My name is Bob Nasiff and I'm a national Chessmaster and SHDS's Chess Coach. I want to welcome all SHDS students back to school for 2007-8. We'd like to encourage all students to participate in our Chess Club this year. Our theme for this year is Fun and Learning!
Even if you do not know how to play chess, I can easily teach you. Many Americans enjoy chess and it is by far the most popular game played worldwide. Many famous people have enjoyed playing chess including U.S. Presidents, world leaders, great thinkers, athletes, entertainers, artists, etc. Chess can be a very positive lifetime activity/hobby and in some cases can lead to a very rewarding profession in the field of tournament play, teaching and writing. In fact several colleges and universities offer chess scholarships (check the College Chess Scholarship Page on the Internet for a complete listing of schools)
Chess club meets on Wednesdays from 11:15 to 12 noon in the activity room. Many activities are planned this year with chances for students to represent SHDS in chess competition at the local and national levels. We will also start club championship tournament competition with games played weekly. There will also be bughouse and speed tournaments, trips to monthly scholastic tournaments in central NY, etc. I will also lecture at most meetings to help players improve their games and parents and SHDS staff are welcome to attend these sessions. I will also be teaching students how to search the Internet for chess activitie.
So please become a part of one of the most successful scholastic chess clubs in central New York. For more information, you can contact me at 677-9605 or yankee@twcny.rr.com, or Dr. Davis at 446-1900.
