Welcome to First Grade!

First Grade is a crucial year both developmentally and academically. Children are no longer the youngest in the school, and become full-fledged students in every sense. During this year, we hope to achieve the following goals:

  • Help each child to develop and nurture a positive sense of self.

  • Allow the children to take an active role in the classroom and in their own education.

  • Teach children how to accept responsibility for their actions.

  • Develop strong study skills for future success.

  • Treat each child as an individual both socially and academically.

  • Enable children to unlock the mysteries of the written word, allowing each child to discover the joys of reading and writing.

  • Ensure that each child has strong phonemic awareness, one of the most crucial building blocks to reading success and fluency.

  • Utilize a daily individualized reading and writing component to supplement the curriculum, allowing each child to master skills at his or her own pace.

  • Follow New York State standards for First Grade in all content areas.

  • Make each child comfortable using and accessing technology as a tool in their education.

This year promises to be exciting, enriching, and enjoyable!
